''Beyond My Fence and Faces''
I stood nervous and unsure
Afraid without support
that I'd come crashing to the floor
Without a wall to lean on
didn't know quite where to stand
But now I'm feeling balanced
since you offered me your hand
Without the script I've memorized
didn't know what I would say
Somehow the words came easy
and it's never felt this way
Without the map I've mastered
will I know which road to choose?
We'll find our way together
even if at times confused
Beyond my fence and faces
you have found what's real in me
And proved once and for all
there's no one else I need to be!
COMMENTARY:
Unconvinced of our greatness, we often build fences to keep the world from peering too deeply inside. Unaware of our beauty, we often don many faces to hide what's natural. Unaccustomed to letting things happen naturally, we often adopt a method of operation that keeps things safely under our control.
Here's an experiment for the new year: The next time you venture into a relationship, leave the crutches, the structure, the script, and the map behind. Step beyond the fence and leave the faces at home. Be open to doing things differently. There's an inner beauty that the world can see, even if you can't. There's greatness within you that needs no extra support or embellishment. Who knows, you might just find someone out there who can appreciate you just the way you are. Someone who can help you walk without crutches, live beyond fences, speak without a script and enjoy life's journey together without the old maps! And how cool would that be!?
