PRELUDE:
For some there's pride in poverty
and luxury in lack
So powerful's the pull when freed
they often go right back

Familiar Fears and Failures

Just like a badge of honor
I wore suffering on my sleeve
My strength came from the triumph
Or at least, so I believed

Just like a rite of passage
I embraced the life that's dire
Quite proud of that which I became
when tempered by life's fire

But like all rites and medals
are reminders of times passed
That tempt us to relive our wins
and make those moments last

I sought familiar fears and failures
rather than the new
To recreate the honors
of the hells I've made it through

It doesn't have to be like this!!
I now resolve today
To seek new fears to conquer
and let old ones pass away!

COMMENTARY:
I know it's wrong, but I keep going back. I know better, but I always find myself in the same situation. Why is this happening to me again!!??? Perhaps because it makes a great story. Perhaps because it's a reminder of a moment of triumph you've had in the past. Perhaps because getting beyond this familiar fear would mean you'd have to face new ones.

Think about it. What better way to feel good about yourself than being able to tell a story of triumph over woe? What better way to win the sympathy and attention of friends than to wallow in the mire of a challenge that you see as character defining? The flaw, however, is that if you get too comfortable in defining your strength in terms of the chaos and deprivation you can endure, you may never have a good reason to really get beyond it. There's an even greater you beyond the current and comfortable chaos and catastrophes!
