PRELUDE:
Last night on PBS, I was watching Dr. Wayne Dyer, a self-help author, speaking on his new book, There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem. In a quite illuminating exercise, he asked the audience to participate in a simple task. He asked everyone in the room to point to themselves. (Before you go continue, I'd like you to do the same. Right now, move your hand away from the mouse or keyboard and point to yourself.) He then asked everyone in the room to look around and notice everyone else doing the same thing. Now if you're like everyone in the room that evening, you too are now probably directing your finger directly at your heart. Notice that you're not pointing to your head, your foot or your shoulder. So, the lesson here is:

I'm not what's in my head
how liberating this could be!
It's true my thoughts create my world
but never define ME

I'm not what's in my head
though errant thoughts may be in charge
I'll take the power from my fears
before they grow too large

I'm not what's in my head
but like a world that's yet to be
The real me is inside my heart
just yearning to be free

PART 2:
Now that you know that the real you is nowhere inside your head, this gives you another tool to eliminate the fears that are holding you back. According to Armand Dimele of the Public Radio show "The Positive Mind," we all struggle with one or more of five basic fears: 1. the fear of losing control, 2. fear of the unknown 3. fear of failure, 4. fear of dependency, 5. fear of being alone. Here's an overview:

The Five Fears

CONTROL says "Do it my way."
"For I'm safe when I'm in charge."
But freedom says, "I'll set you free
to do what floats your barge!"

UNKNOWN says, "Don't take chances!"
"I am safe with what I know."
But freedom welcomes newness
and will treat life like a show

FAILURE says, "I'm not enough
for neither brain nor beauty's mine."
But freedom says, "I'm worthy
to have more by right divine."

DEPENDENCY says, "Trust you?"
"Heavens no! I've been betrayed."
But freedom says detachment's key
lest life's misfortunes jade

ALONE says, "How will I survive
with none to help me through?"
But freedom says, "I'll make it
frankly with or without you."

So take the time to face the fear
and change how you respond
And know that on the other side
true freedom lies beyond!

COMMENTARY:
With the real you in your heart and not in your head, you'll know that these fears are not real, but just ideas that you've devised to justify responses that keep you feeling safe. But when you discover that, through your heart, you are connected to and part of a greater something through which you are never out of control, never in unfamiliar terrain, never inadequate, never betrayed and never alone, then you are one step closer to freedom!
