And who will fight my battles
making sure I get what's mine?
And clear my path of swindlers
who might call a six a nine?*

And who will sing my praises
making sure the world will know?
And champion the cause called me
and lift me when I'm low?

And who will plead my case?
when others' goal is to condemn
And hold me in esteem
and love me more in spite of them

I know you know the answer
for even I myself can see
Who else can I depend on
if I can't rely on me?

COMMENTARY:
I can always rely on my good friend Chris to give me food for thought, and the occasional catchy phrase for an inspiration. While discussing the details of recent contract between two parties, she commented that people often act against their own best interests, and that often because of low self-esteem, we can't always rely on ourselves to exercise "the appropriate level of self advocacy."

And while it's great to have people in your corner cheering you on, ultimately it'll be you who has responsibility, as Bob Marley says, to "Get up, stand up! Stand up for your rights!"

*"A SIX FOR A NINE????"
In Jamaica, we have saying that when someone tries to "give you six for a nine," it means that they're trying to trick you, in essence by offering something of lesser value for something of greater value. They're hoping you won't notice the deception because of the similarity in the appearance (a "6" being an inverted "9") of the two digits.
