Did you think it wouldn't matter?
did you think there'd be no price?
That a simple pennance here and there
would make up and suffice?

Did you think there'd be no consequence?
no final dues to pay?
That such a life lived carelessly
would let you get away?

Did you think there'd be no damages?
no fine levied at last?
Run roughshod through the years
and simply wish away your past?

Did you think it was all random?
like a game of chance you'd won?
And not be held accountable
for things done and not done?

Well, time to pay the piper
and the price is more than feared.
Your body, mind and soul are taxed
until your debt is cleared

COMMENTARY:
You're old enough to know better. You're aware enough to know you've been greedy. You've lived life excessively and indulged in vices you've known were not conducive to health.

You've done this for all these years and have justified and rationalized your behavior one way or another because you believed that if your reasons were good enough--that if everyone else was doing it, that if your religion and your doctor said it was okay--that you could get away with it.

Well, all these thoughts, words and behaviors have consequences. You'll eventually see, feel and experience the effects of the paths you've chosen. The illnesses, the pains, the lack of vitality, the bad luck, the condemnations--these are not random. They are the end result of the choices you've made. The good news is: you can start to make amends, pay arrears, clear the ledger.
