''My Person and Me''

I played a game called disconnect
way back when I was five
My mind and me went separate ways
so both could stay alive

The body me and conscious me
for years we lived apart
Convening on occasion
when survival deemed it smart

This separation served me well
for refuge I could find:
In mind, relief from body's blows
in body, peace from mind

It never stopped my progress
on this plane of friend and foe
Through life and love I fooled them all
and no one seemed to know

I lived apart unconscious
never...fully...really...here
Reality was filtered
through a disengaged veneer

But now the threat is gone
no cause for such schemes to persist
It's madness to base actions
on false fears that don't exist

I sensed the day was nearing
fate and fact no fret or fight
A day when selves estranged too long
would finally reunite

So slowly they've been coming
former sparks for which I'd yearn
The days when life felt crisp and real
were starting to return

Well...

Today my person said hello!
and boy was I surprised
I hardly recognized me
for so long was I disguised

No longer playing disconnect
from games we now live free
We're living life as two through one
my person, yes, and me
