''How Long''

are unfathomable
to those who have none--Walt
How long should I keep asking
if I'm not getting a reply?
Perhaps I'll set a limit
and then no more Mr. Nice Guy!
How long should I expect
that "things will simply all work out"?
I've lived by that philosophy
but now I find I'm having doubt
How long should I persist
and follow those who do believe
You knock and doors will open
you ask and you receive?
How long should I keep waiting
for results to manifest?
I know the key is patience
and this is just a cosmic test
For time does not exist
'cause now is all we ever know
And measured dreams won't feed the soul
(They're like seeds we never sow)
I am, therefore I dream
of that there's nothing to debate
So as long as I keep dreaming,
as long, too, so will I wait!
COMMENTARY:
Being the more traditional/practical member of a marriage to a dreamer, a non-entrepreneur friend of mine asked me, "How long do you pursue your entrepreneurial dreams before you give up and get a real job?" She wanted to understand how her husband thinks, and how much time she should allow before asking him to change course.
"You don't understand," I told her. "Real dreamers don't set time limits on their dreams. They don't say, 'I'll work at this for 5 years, and if I don't make it, I'll abandon the dream'. Real dreamers commit to the journey once, and then go for it. For the journey's the thing, however long it takes. Dreamers can't stop themselves from dreaming. And when they dream, they dream with no end in sight save the living of the dream."
