''The Charge for Change''
In every field and function
naught but change can be assured
But lest you lead the charge
your fancied future is obscured
For change can be a thing decreed
by rulers from afar
Or change can be a bubbling spring
that starts right where you are
Unless you lead the charge for change
there's little you'll command
You'll walk the roads that others pave
and pay what they demand
The charge for change is action
for no future's ever free
And never fear the fumble
as you strive for what might be!
COMMENTARY:
Today's Life Rhyme is inspired by a quote from Howard Thurman, poet, preacher, political activist (1900-1981). Thurman, who had great influence on the US civil rights struggle of the 60s was referring to the changes that American society was fumbling towards through the efforts of people like Martin Luther King, Jr. In time, he intoned, what we see as struggle today will be a way of life for those who come after.
Yes, we do live in a world and a universe of change. Whether in the global spheres of politics, education, health, or the personal sphere of influence within your family or the pursuit of your passion, I encourage you to ask yourself, "What charge am I leading?" Am I leading a charge, or am I paying a charge?
What are you doing to effect the changes you want to see in our world? Are you simply waiting to see what price you'll have to pay because of changes others have made? What steps are you taking to improve life for your community, your world, its children and yourself? Are you leading a charge, or are you paying it?
