''Points for Trying''
just not enough to say you've won
The game goes not to those who try
but those who get more done
You'll get an "A" for Effort, yes
but that won't mean you'll pass
For Effort's just a minor course
results, now that's the class
You'll win the hearts of some
but fame alone won't swing the vote
Until you risk and sink or swim
you're trapped in the same boat
For doers aren't remembered
for the things they tried to do
They're known for their results
and yes, the same applies to you!
COMMENTARY:
"At least I tried" may be good for some, but no bridges were ever made, no laws were ever changed, no battles ever won by those who were content simply to try. The only purpose a try serves is to increase the chances of actually doing a thing. Results are what matter.
p.s. by the way, here was my original choice of opening stanza:
You do get points for trying
just not enough to change the score
The game's not won by those who tried
but those who just do more
Which one do you like more?
