''What Makes Sense''

Perhaps I'll do what's easy
or perhaps I'll do what's fair
Perhaps I'll think about myself
and act like I don't care

But all good friends and partners
do what's best for all involved
We'll simply do what makes most sense
no worries, problem solved

COMMENTARY: Yesterday a friend called to request my help disposing of a vehicle. Because of where the vehicle was currently parked, and where it was going to be stored, it was one of those situations that involved a meeting, travel in two vehicles to the new location, a ride back in one vehicle, pick up of first vehicle, you get the idea...

Anyway, as we worked through the logistics to determine where we should meet, who should pick up whom, etc., he made his suggestion, and then added, "...whatever's convenient for you." To which I replied, "Well, I want to do what makes sense."

While I appreciated his concern for my ease and convenience, (considering that he was asking for a favor), it occurred to me that as his friend, my own obligation was to make the whole interaction convenient for both of us, so that no one person was unduly inconvenienced.

I've always found in life that if you do what makes sense, (i.e. the least amount of travel, money spent, etc. for BOTH parties) that everyone comes out winning. So even if I have to spend a few dollars, if it's less than what HE would spend to accomplish the same ends, then if we're a team, it makes sense for me to spend it, so the total "inconvenience" for the team is minimized, even if it's not particularly convenient for me.

Convenient isn't always fair. But when we do what makes sense, from the perspective of a team, then everyone wins. Things balance in the end.
