''No Need to Run''

There's no need to run
for there's nothing to fear
But so much can be gained
by your presence right here

For people push buttons
yes, that's just what they do
But the buttons they push
are on the inside of you

Your emotions are clues
to what simmers below
And that pressure will build
'til you vent it or blow

Let the feelings arise
note the ways that you feel
For they point to the places
you need most to heal

And in time you'll be free
from the pain, fears and doubt
But they first must come up
as they make their way out!

Are you one of those people, like me, who just hates confrontation? When faced with a volatile situation or person, maybe like me you would rather just walk away than bring things to a boil. Perhaps you're not accustomed to expressing emotion. Perhaps you fear you'll lose control. Perhaps your anger and pain are so close to the surface that you fear what you'll say or do, or what they (the emotions) will do to you. Perhaps the few times you've actually given in to your feelings, you became a puddle of watery emotion, or an explosive keg of anger and abuse that you'd rather not experience again.

Well, the bad news is that people will forever push your buttons. That's just what people do. But, running won't help, because those buttons they push are on the inside of you. So when you run you take the buttons with you wherever you go. The good news is that you can be free of the fear! Having your buttons pushed hurts because they are connected to those sensitive places inside of you. However, if you always run when the buttons are pushed, then you'll never get to those suppressed emotions. Those buttons are keeping them locked up inside. You'll never be free of them and release them because the memories, the pain, the anger and the fear all have to come back up on their way out!

Let the buttons be pushed. But know that nothing is required of you but a simple awareness of what's going on. No retaliation. No reaction.

Acknowledge. Admit. Accept. Grieve. Move on. Soon you'll be able to separate the buttons, from the pusher and from the past. There'll come a day when you won't simply react, but you'll have clarity and a peace from which you can choose life's best responses; responses that support your highest calling; responses that allow you to grow in your awareness of who you are: a you that you can't see clearly if you're too busy running!
