''What I Learned From Al''

Today while listening to performers in Farragut Park in downtown D.C., I shared a bench with an elderly gentleman named Al. We chatted about life and music and acting and passions, and about his sons. What was most curious was that while they (his sons) had both achieved some impressive milestones in their individual pursuits, they still hadn't reached the point where they were 100% financially self- sufficient through their creative endeavors. I wondered what the missing ingredient was. Eventually, he told me...Here's What I Learned From Al

Today I met a man named Al
whose sons where on his mind
for both pursued their passions
but still both were in a bind

For neither one had made their mark
to claim the title "great"
despite their own best efforts
it was Al who filled their plate

"Work hard", he said, "and I'll support"
you only have to call
Yes Al was there to catch them both
if ever they should fall

They hadn't ever worked a job
(a blessing in disguise)
for freedom seems a grander goal
when seen through captive eyes

I told him what they need
is something Al could not provide
and truth be told his "help" 'til now
had crippled them inside

Unless they stumble, stall or sink
they'll never find their best
for even eagles fear to fly
'til pushed beyond the nest

They say a man who's taught to fish
goes through a mental shift
the pride of "I can do for self"
might be life's greatest gift!
